Hughes Memorial Weekly Update - Monday, July 13

This Week's Memory Verse

" Then I got up during the night, I and a few men with me; I told no one what my God had put into my heart to do for Jerusalem." Nehemiah 2:12a

Thought For the Week

"If God has birthed a vision in you, He is in the process of developing a similar vision in the hearts of others around you.  When the time comes to share your vision, it will ring true in the souls of those He has been preparing." -Andy Stanley

Letter from the Pastor

Greetings Faith Family,

I pray for your strength in the LORD. I am writing you to request your financial support to enable us to expand our C.A.P. (Community Anti-violence Program) ministry. The primary objective of C.A.P. is to help at-risk children and youth in our community understand the root causes and ramifications of violence and to develop non-violent ways of expressing themselves. Each week during the school year we show at-risk children and youth in our community the love of God as we mentor and tutor them. We also provide them with a free healthy dinner. The C.A.P. ministry seeks to provide a loving and supportive presence in the life of children and youth who otherwise may be vulnerable to gangs, drugs, violence or other negative influences.
Your generous donations along with grants we have applied for will help us expand C.A.P. by providing funds for additional mentors and tutors. We currently minister to about 20 - 30 C.A.P. kids. But, we want to expand C.A.P. so we can touch the lives of more at-risk children and youth. We have partnered with Campus Kitchens which is a mission of Metropolitan Memorial UMC. Campus Kitchens provides the meals that we serve our C.A.P. kids. Campus Kitchens is willing to supply as much food as we need. The number of mentors and tutors is our biggest hindrance to expanding C.A.P. We have initiated a partnership with Howard University to provide mentors and tutors but we will need to provide them with a stipend of $50/week per student. I realize the majority of our congregation is physically and emotionally unable to serve as mentors and tutors to at-risk youth due to our age and health concerns. However, we have a history of financially supporting C.A.P.
This Sunday we will take up a special collection for C.A.P. please give generously!
Agape,

Pastor Paul

Hughes Memorial Weekly Update- Monday, July 6

This Week's Memory Verse

" The king said to me, "What is it you want?" Then I prayed to the God of heaven, and I answered the king, "If it pleases the king and if your servant has found favor in his sight, let him send me to the city of Judah where my ancestors are buried so that I can rebuild it" Nehemiah 2:4-5

Thought For the Week

"It must be borne in mind that the tragedy of life doesn't lie in not reaching your goal.  The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach.  It isn't a calamity to die with dreams unfulfilled, but it is a calamity not to dream.  It is not a disaster to be unable to capture your ideal, but it is a disaster to have no ideal to capture.  It is not a disgrace not to reach the stars, but it is a disgrace to have no stars to reach for.  Not failure, but low aim is sin." Benjamin E. Mays
